For her highly personal Sunroom Project, Annie Varnot filled the room with enigmatic white sculptures to set up a serene space for contemplating life’s impermanence, as well as the potential for growth and renewal. To create this installation, Varnot collected unsellable eggs from a poultry farmer in Nova Scotia during an artist residency. She then washed and hollowed the dirty or irregularly shaped eggs and set them in plaster, making ambiguous forms with odd protrusions that are mysterious yet seem strangely familiar. Accompanying videos elucidate the visceral experience of manipulating the eggs.

Encaustic works often look and feel delicate because soft, muted colors emerge from the surface. But encaustic is a toxic medium whose complex process deters many artists from its use. Brooklyn Artists Gym wishes to draw awareness to this infrequently used medium through WAX; exposing viewers to encaustic’s typical properties in addition to new artistic approaches.

Brooklyn Artists Gym BAG is an artists’ studio and gallery facility in the Park Slope/Gowanus area of Brooklyn, NY. BAG’s mission is to help make it possible for artists to further their work and careers at a reasonable cost. Started five years ago, BAG also offers classes, critiques, figure drawing, library, kitchenette and all studio facilities.

Work/Space 2012, the 2nd installment of the annual 32 in-house artist group exhibition and open studios event.  Work/Space 2012 will introduce the public to the new artists of the Invisible Dog Art Center as well as exhibit new works by the center’s returning artists.  Over weekend long event, the public will have the unique opportunity to visit and meet with the in-house artists in their studios. Work/Space 2012 will showcase a broad range of work from the classical to the contemporary, fine art to design by these Brooklyn-based artists’ who are bound together by the physical space they share at The Invisible Dog Art Center.

threesquared presents an exhibition of new works by Nashville-based artist Jodi Hays. Strong in the Broken Places will feature recent oil paintings and works on paper.

In this exhibition, Hays uses physical space as metaphor for psychological space. Through a deft and deliberate balance of line and form, she leverages images one might associate with marking transitions or temporal site: construction fences, festoons, and caution tape. The work’s constant thread is an inquiry into how quotidian images can explore personal circumstance and transcend themselves.  A process the artist terms “a kind of aesthetic redemption.”

“To call Hays’ paintings landscapes probably isn’t be the best way to describe them, but it’s not inaccurate. She uses images of construction fences, festoons and caution tape minus the actual landscape, which remains only through implication — kind of like a temporary map of a place that’s in transition. In the same way that blueprints stand in for a building before it’s built, but are really no more than ink on paper, Hays’ works break down a place to its bare essentials. The new paintings in her show at Threesquared, curated by Sara Estes, are just as aesthetically pleasing as the traditional Japanese woodblocks you’ll see at Vanderbilt Fine Arts Gallery this season, but with a distinctively contemporary sentiment.”
