Artemisia Gentileschi (1593-1656) is probably the most well-known historical female painter. Having the good fortune to be born into a family of artists, she was able to practise and develop her talent in the family workshop. She attained notoriety by taking to court the painting tutor her father had assigned her, on a charge of rape. This was upheld only after she had to prove her story under torture.
She was the first female artist to be admitted to the Florentine Academy of Art and Design and she was also, for a time, painter in the court of Charles I of England.
