Anna Atkins (1799-1871) was possibly the first woman to experiment with the new technology of photography. In these very early days, there was no institutionalised training available for women to be excluded from and women were free to experiment. She made cyanotypes, a type of photographic print where an object is placed directly on the paper and exposed to light. She used natural materials such as ferns and decaying leaves to make these images, publishing them in the first text books to use photographs.
