Julia Margaret Cameron (1815-1879) is a familiar name to anyone interested in the history of photography. This was a medium which had a number of women among its early practitioners as it was thought of as more of an interesting diversion rather than a serious art form at this time. She chiefly took portraits of friends and notable figures of the time and her style is typified by a soft, unfocussed romanticism with strong use of light and shade.
