Born into a noble family, Anguissola and her six sisters were provided with instruction in painting and music and, therefore able to develop their creative talent.
She was the first artist of any gender to depict a domestic family scene and was much in demand as a portrait painter to the upper echelons of society. She achieved fame and fortune in her lifetime and continued to paint into old age.
