Rosalba Carriera (1675-1757) was a pioneer of pastels and popularised their use in portraiture. She was also one of the originators of the Rococo style in painting. On her first trip to Paris she was much in
demand and made portraits of people up to the highest strata of society, including royalty. She was very successful in her lifetime and influenced a wide range of other artists. Her sister did much of the work to support her such as preparing materials and painting backgrounds and in return, Rosalba sustained her family through her art.
