Charcoal, eraser on paper
Lilly Spencer Martin (1822-1902) is known for her paintings of domestic scenes, with cooks, washerwomen and housewives all favourite themes. This style of painting was popular at the time in America and although money was tight, she managed to support her husband and 13 children through her painting.
The subject matter she chose would have enabled her to stay around her family, even using them as models. Her work was extensively reproduced at the time, with up to a million lithographs of her paintings sold by the time of the American Civil War.
