P402i Developing Practice: Independent Study / Mixed Mediums — ONLINE JANUARY – MARCH 2017
Wednesdays: 04 January – 08 March 2017
PROFESSOR: John Ros
Develop your practice or a specific project with more focus and rigor. Developing Practice: Independent Study is intended for artists who want to focus studio time on a specific project or body of work with access to a weekly one-on-one crits with the professor and on-line classroom discussions, no matter what level of higher education or stage in their career.
A look into the finer details of exhibiting your work. Topics will include dealing with galleries and contracts, do-it-yourself projects, proper packaging and handling, hanging and lighting, marketing and event planing.
Artist branding and public image is an important part of any creative practice. We will discuss industry standards for CV’s, statements and websites and will help you develop a confident and continuous artistic identity.
We are looking for a curatorial proposal from an independent curator or artist to publish online on 15 june 2015. The exhibit will run as the galleryELL featured exhibit throughout the summer and will remain online indefinitely.
We are open to any and all curatorial ideas keeping in mind the digital forum — the work and overall concept should translate well through a computer screen and/or mobile device. The finished project must include a curatorial essay along with properly formatted images for publishing online.
The chosen proposal will be selected by the current artist members of galleryELL. galleryELL will offer support in developing the exhibition by providing guidance, timetables, copy and design support. Though there is no monetary prize for this project, you will be fully supported and offered an online venue to exhibit your curatorial vision. There is no fee to apply.

Reich Paper is a family-owned business that sells quality old world papers with the innovation and needs of the new world in an environmentally sustainable way. It is located at 7518 Third Avenue in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn and has been chosen as the 4th venue in the Stand series.
Paper is visceral, a loved and invaluable material for every artist. Humble and hard working it is usually the first place for the artist’s ideas to take hold. For this show you are being asked simply to use it. Cut it, paint it, draw on it, sculpt it… Cultivate a relationship to it, but don’t get too attached. Enter it into the Pop Up Paper Show and give it a chance to form new relationships. This is our homage to the humble workhorse that is paper and it is fitting that we honor it by giving it a chance to find a new home and a new love. Make it priced to sell because it won’t be sitting for long. This Pop Up Paper Show will only be around for one evening. (more…)
You would like to set up an art studio, but where do you begin? Investigate the process of how to set up a professional studio. The day will provide practical tools for assessing location, organizational skills to assist in setup and maintenance, and ideas of how to build your professional practice.
A look into artist branding and public image. You should bring samples of your work, any statements, CVs, writing, etc. The day will be broken into three parts: web, statements and CVs with an overall focus on building a continuous brand identity.
Residencies are great for focused studio time, networking and building your CV. This course will give you tips, know-how and confidence. Look into the best places to start researching and scrutinize your administrative skills to ensure you get that residency.
