Reverend Henry Collis, MA

Oil on canvas, c.1896
Jane Day c.1844 – 1928

Almost nothing is known of this fine local portrait painter other than that she was of Half Yoke, East Farleigh and was from a family of grocers.
She painted many local worthies, including Samuel Bentlif, founder of the Art Gallery in the Late Victorian period, a work which now hangs on the landing outside this exhibition. The Museum would be pleased to hear any information you may have about Jane.
This painting was presented to Rev.Collis by the past and present students of the Maidstone Technical School on 10th December 1896 in appreciation of his work. Rev.Collis was the vicar of St Philip’s Church, Maidstone for 40 years from 1862 and was Honorary Canon of Canterbury Cathedral in 1904. He was also a member of the Museum Committee and founder of the College of Art in 1867.
