Margaret Hazlitt 1770 – 1844
Margaret was the sister of essayist William Hazlitt and artist John Hazlitt. Known as ‘Peggy’, she remained single and spent much of her life looking after her ageing parents.
She kept a journal in the 1830s of the family’s experiences in England, Ireland and America (published by the University of Kansas Press, Lawrence 1967). She was mainly concerned with reporting on the doings of the menfolk, seemingly without ambition for herself.
Described as a ‘kindly, gentle girl’ and ‘the heart of the family’, her art was in the style of a woman doing it as an ‘accomplishment’.
